From January to February this year, Thailand's export of canned American pineapple soared to 32,145 tons, an increase of 87% over the previous year. Thai canned pineapple accounts for more than half of the total imports of American canned pineapple. The Philippines exported 15,448 tons of canned pineapple to the United States, down 3% from last year. Canned pineapple in the Philippines accounts for 34% of the total imported pineapple in the United States. During the same period, Indonesia exported 6,950 tons of canned pineapple to the United States, down 28% from last year, the lowest in nearly three years. Reported that Indonesian industry insiders said the reason for the slowdown in sales is related to the El Nio phenomenon resulting in lower production. In mid-February, an insider in the country told me that the arrival of El Nino last year would affect crops in Indonesia in the first few months of 2016. Chinese and Vietnamese exports of American canned pineapple increased significantly. Kenya exported 973 tons of canned pineapple to the United States, down 48% year on year. FOODNEWS forecasts a decline in production in the region. Information shows that in September 2015, Kenya's food subsidiary and the country's largest exporter of fresh fruit and canned pineapple failed to renew their leased pineapple plantations in the country, which may result in forced closure of its factories. With the exception of Kenya, the unit price of canned pineapple imported by the United States from all over the world has increased. From January to February this year, the average price of canned pineapple imported from the United States was $1,233 per ton, an increase of 12% over the previous year. The highest price of canned pineapple imported by the United States from the Philippines was $993 per ton, up 11% from the previous year, which was also the cheapest among the three largest canned pineapple producers; the average price of canned pineapple imported from Thailand was $1,366 per ton, up 7.5% and 36% respectively from last year and the previous year; and the average price of canned pineapple imported from Indonesia was $1,183 per ton, the same as the previous year. The average price of canned pineapple imported from China was $1,124 per ton, up 8% and down 5.9% respectively from last year and the previous year. The average price of canned pineapple imported by the United States from Kenya was $1,105 per ton, down 7% from last year.
