China's peach industry remains stable 2018-07-17 11:05:21

It is estimated that the number of processed peaches and nectarines in China has reached 2 million 400 thousand tons this year, an increase of 4% over last year. It is estimated that China's total commercial output will increase by 2% to 14 million 300 thousand tons.

This week, the Foreign Agricultural Service Department of the US Department of Agriculture reported that local farmers in Shandong Province, China's largest place of peach origin, predicted that the prices of peaches would remain unchanged, consistent with the price of 8 yuan ($1.18) in the same period last year.
According to the Chinese Ministry of agriculture, "the output of Chinese peaches and nectarines is expected to remain at the present level, and the planting area seems to be stabilizing after the rapid expansion of new plants in the past few years."
From the end of 5 to the beginning of October, most of the production came from central and Northern China.
The consumption of peaches and nectarines is still growing, because it is one of the most popular fruits in China. However, the US Department of agriculture's report is concerned that as production continues to increase, the risk of oversupply is increasing: "fertilizers and other practices affect the taste of fruit, and consumers are increasingly willing to pay more for organic fruit."
The export of fresh peach and nectarine in China is expected to reach 80 thousand tons this year, an increase of 9% over last year. Central Asia, including Russia and Kazakhstan, is China's largest export market for fresh peaches. Other major fresh fruit markets are southeastern countries, where the number is relatively stable.
The average annual export volume of canned peaches and nectarines in China is about 150 thousand tons. So far, China has exported 53 thousand tons. Its largest market is Japan, which imported 35000 tons last year, followed by Mexico (9000 tons), Canada (7000 tons), Chile (3700 tons), Australia (3000 tons) and South Korea (2500 tons).
The US Department of agriculture's report also focuses on Cherry harvest in China for fresh and frozen products. This occurred between mid May and late June, and is expected to reach 360 thousand tons this year.
In northern China, peaches and cherries are affected by the cold and dry spring, resulting in smaller fruit sizes, but the new situation helps, especially this year's cherry production is expected to reach a record level.
