 Canada formulated regulations on sweeteners

On October 15, 2007, the Canadian Ministry of Health announced that it had received an application for permission to use potassium acetesulfame-potassium, sucralose or a mixture of two sweeteners in standard canned fruits, including apples, peaches, pears, pineapples, grapefruit, canned citrus and non-standard canned fruits, including what Canned fruits and tropical fruit salad. The maximum limits for the use of acesulfame-potassium and sucralose in these products were 0.007% and 0.025%, respectively. The assessment of available data supports the safety and efficacy of canned fruits using either alone or in combination with the two sweeteners according to prescribed standards.

The use of such sweeteners is conducive to consumers and the industry, providing a sweetener substitute that helps reduce sugar content in canned fruits. The Canadian Department of Health has therefore proposed amending the Food and Drug Code to allow the use of potassium acetesulfame-potassium at the highest standard of 0.007% and the highest standard of 0.025%. Use three sucralose (sucralose) or mix it for canned fruit in non standard section B.11.101.

As part of the formally revised regulatory procedures and as a means of improving the resilience of the coordination mechanism, this Interim Marketing License (IMA) is hereby issued to allow potassium acetesulfame-potassium and sucralose as sweeteners to be used directly as apples, peaches, pears, pineapples, grapefruit, Wenzhou tangerines and shreds according to the highest standards set above. Canned fruits and tropical fruit salad.

The proposed coordinated revision will include the licensing of potassium acetylsulfonate (Acesulfame-potassium) and sucralose sweeteners. The measures adopted by the safety assessment support revision have little impact on the economy and environment. Therefore, this coordinated amendment measure can be approved directly and published in part II of the Canadian Official Gazette.
