In July 22, 2011, the Brazil agricultural protection Secretariat (SDA) issued the final version of the canned technical specification for sardines, INSTRUO NORMATIVA No- 22, DE 11 DE JULHO DE 2011, which cancelled the controversial species of sardines raw fish and the specific name of "sardines canned". The use restriction is also handled by SDA animal products inspection department (DIPOA).

 

In the previous draft SDA PORTARIA No- 406 released in August 2010, DE 10 DE AGOSTO DE 2010, Brazil made the following restrictions on the species of sardine canned raw fish:

 

 

 

A) sardines in Rio De Janeiro / sardines Sardinella Janeiro (= S. brasiliensis) in Brazil;

 

B) golden sardines Sardinella aurita;

 

C) sardas sardines / European sardines Sardina pilchardus;

 

D) American sardine Sardinops sagax and its related species (S. melanostictus, S. neopilchardus and S. caeruleus);

 

E) the Atlantic silk herring / line herring Opisthonema oglinum;

 

F) Pacific herring Opisthonema libertate

 

These regulations were opposed by the other main producers of sardines in Morocco.
