On September 10, 2010, the Secretariat for Agricultural Protection of the Ministry of Agricultural Animal Husbandry and Food Supply of Brazil issued Ministerial Decree No. 459 (PORTARIA No-459, DE 10 DE SETEMBRO DE 2010) of 2010, which formulated the draft "Brazilian tuna and skipjack canned technical regulations" and its quality sampling inspection program.

 

The main points of the draft are as follows:

 

1. The content of fish in the final product should not be less than 64% of the nominal net weight (allowing the maximum deviation of 10%).

 

2. Tuna/skipjack canned fish: refers to canned fish products packaged in sealed containers and heated (to ensure commercial sterility) with fresh or frozen tuna or skipjack. The types of fish available include:

 

A) tuna:

 

Long fin tuna Thunnus alalunga;

 

Yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares;

 

Black fin tuna Thunnus atlanticus;

 

Big Eye Tuna / Big Eye Tuna Thunnus obesus;

 

Southern bluefin tuna / southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii;

 

Northern bluefin tuna / Northern tuna Thunnus thynnus;

 

Green tuna / yellowfin tuna Thunnus tonggol; e

 

Bonito Katsuwonus pelamis.

 

B) bonito Bonitos:

 

Fox bonito Sarda Sarda;

 

Chilean bonito Sarda chiliensis;

 

Bonito Sarda orientalis;

 

Tuna Euthynnus alletteratus;

 

Euthynnus affinis;

 

Bluefin tuna Euthynnus lineatus; e

 

Auxis thazard.
