Proper food storage ensures that your food is safe, fresh and full of natural nutrients. Using this guide can help you store food safely and decide the food that is saved or thrown away.
Food dating
Are all the foods on your hands high quality and safe? The date on the parcel will help you make a decision.
"Fresh date" or "best use date"
This tells you that if the food is stored properly, it will be fresh for long, and the quality is the best. After this date, the product may still be safe to eat, but may not taste good.
Fresh food: bread, salad dressing, raisins and cereals. Many canned products have a "best quality use" date printed on the top or bottom of the cans. Canned food rarely has a "expiration" date.
"Sell by date"
This is the food that the food store should sell on the last day. Most of the food is fresh and safe about a week after the sale.
Food sold by date: cheese, milk, meat and yogurt.
"Valid period"
This is the food that should be eaten on the last day. If it is not safe, the date is over.
Overdue food: infant formula
No date food
