Is the mushroom a vegetable?
Mushrooms have become a part of human diet and enjoy them in many different cuisines for many years. But there is one question: mushrooms are vegetables? If not, then... What is it?
You may have heard that mushrooms are fungi, but does that mean that they are not vegetables? Or both?
A short answer. Henryman explained that mushrooms are scientifically classified as fungi. Because they have no leaves, roots or seeds, they do not need light growth. They are not real vegetables.
However, as far as nutrition is concerned, the USDA considers mushrooms to be vegetables because they provide the same nutritional properties as vegetables. According to the study published by the National Institutes of health of the National Academy of medicine, mushrooms provide nutrients that span core food groups. Nutrients found in edible mushrooms, meat and grain can also be found in mushrooms. They are a good source of nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid, selenium and copper, providing at least 10% to 19% of the daily value. They are also a good source of riboflavin, providing nearly 20% of the daily value. Mushrooms are also sources of potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin D and calcium, and the four nutrients are consumed by the American dietary guidelines.
Mushrooms are classified as fungi by botany and are considered to be a nutritious vegetable. They provide a wide range of nutrients and are good news for those who like to eat mushrooms on pizza and favorite dishes.
