Three Australians died, and Lester's disease was mostly related to cucurbits.
The Australian health authorities say three people have died and another 12 are ill in the List Rand outbreak related to contaminated rock melon, and more cases are expected.
The State Food Administration confirmed on its website that the outbreak was related to a grower melon (also known as Hami melon) in New South Wales. The unnamed farm product company has stopped operating and is investigating.
New South Wales's health ministry said late Friday that 15 victims were elderly people who had been spread from Victoria to Tasmania across the country.
"We can confirm that 13 of the 15 patients have eaten watermelons before the onset of the disease," Dr. Vicky Sheppeard, director of the infectious disease of the New South Wales State Department of health, said in a media report. Anyone susceptible to Lester's disease should discard any watermelon purchased before March 1st.
The health authorities assured the public that all contaminated Cucumis were removed from the supermarket shelves.
Further cases are expected to occur because the symptoms may take up to six weeks to finish the contaminated agricultural products, and NSW health tells consumers to see a doctor if they have symptoms.
This disease can cause the symptoms of frausk and cause nausea, diarrhea, bloodstream infections and brain infections.
Lester's bacteria do not cause most people's illnesses, but for people with weak immunity, such as the elderly, the newborns and the pregnant women, they can cause illness and death.
Bacteria exist in soil, water and vegetation. Wherever they are produced, they pollute the food, from harvest to service.
The food administration of New South Wales says the food that may lead to Lester's disease includes pre cut melon, cold salad, raw seafood and smoked salmon, unpasteurized dairy products, germinated seeds and raw mushrooms.
Lester is rare in Australia, but since last month, a deadly outbreak in South Africa has killed more than 170 people, the National Institute of infectious diseases said last month.
