Scientists in the United States found that most canned foods in the domestic market were contaminated by bisphenol A.

More than 90 percent of canned food samples collected from the U.S. market were contaminated with BPA, according to a recent study published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the website of the American Chemical Society reported.

According to the authors, bisphenol A was detected in 71 out of 78 canned food samples, but not in two frozen food samples packaged in plastic bags. The two frozen food samples served as the control group.

The results showed that the concentration of BPA in different samples was significantly different, whether in different products of the same kind of food or in different batches of the same kind of food. Bisphenol A content in retail products may not be higher than that in famous brands, and bisphenol A concentration in organic foods may not be lower than that in ordinary foods.

Federal scientists at the FDA said the data showed less regularity, notably the lowest levels of BPA in fruits and tuna.
