Canned meat products and another dog food produced by Castleberry must be recycled because of botulinum toxin, the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement Wednesday. It is estimated that affected canned food may be as many as thousands of cans.

 

According to Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao, many people were taken to hospital after eating the canned food. Four people are still in serious condition.

 

Castlebury began its recycling operation on July 18, and has volunteered to expand the scope of its product because of fears that more people might be attacked by Botox. Initially, 10 products were recycled, but later expanded to more than 80, including stews, chili peppers, minced meat and other products, as well as a variety of brands of pet food.

 

"It's a big recycling operation," said Elder of the regulatory office of the U.S. Drug Administration. "It's also an emergency public health event." The authorities call on consumers and sellers to identify these foods and discard them.

 

Botulinum poisoning outbreaks due to canned food are rare in the United States and have not occurred for more than 30 years.
