Seeking the way to survive in China's canned industry

From 2008 to 2009, it was a long and lasting time for the Chinese cannery companies whose eyes were only looking out, with reduced orders and increased inventories uuuuuuuuuuuu A financial crisis has given the industry, which has long been heavily dependent on exports, a big boost, and this stage is destined to make a big difference in the history of canned goods in China. "From the second half of 2008 to the first half of 2009, China's canning industry was strongly impacted. Especially from January to April 2009, the export volume of canned goods decreased by 21.6% year on year. This crisis also gave a lesson to China's canning industry." Liang Zhongkang, chairman of the China Canning Industry Association, said in an interview with the China Joint Commercial Daily.

In 2009, the crisis continued to spread, canning companies can no longer live a good life, is waiting for the recovery of the international market or the transformation of the domestic market? Many canning enterprises in China look back and begin to find a way to survive in China. However, to open up the domestic market, whether from their own business or market development, will face many difficulties.

Start early and catch up late

Canned food (canned food), refers to the food raw materials after pretreatment, seasoning, into containers, sealed by vacuum, sterilization made of a long-term preservation of food processing methods. "That is to say, all food sealed sterilization or sterilization sealed (aseptic packaging) to achieve commercial aseptic, long-term preservation of food at room temperature collectively known as canned food. Its packaging materials are tin tin cans, glass cans, aluminum alloy cans, soft cans, aseptic large packaging, first sterilized and then packaged made of Tetra bags, sterilizable plastic cans and so on. Liang Zhongkang explained that there is a misunderstanding about canned food in China, such as "lack of nutrition" and "containing preservatives." From the processing method of canned food, we can know that canned food does not need preservatives at all, and there is no stale statement.

Canning industry is a traditional export industry in China. It is the first commodity for many Chinese food products to enter the international market. According to Liang Zhongkang, canned goods were exported in China in the 1950s and 1960s, which played an important role in repaying the Soviet Union's foreign debt. Therefore, the Chinese canning industry had a brilliant period of time. Canned food factories were sprouting all over the country, and almost every county had canned food factories.

In the 1990s, with the further step of reform and opening up and the development of market economy, the canning industry in China was faced with key changes. First, the change of management mechanism, the change of planned economy mode and the start of independent operation, and second, the change of system, the restructuring of state-owned enterprises and the bankruptcy of many enterprises. Since then, the canned industry has ushered in another glorious period.

"1999-2008 was the best period for the development of China's canning industry. Exports of canned products quadrupled compared with the previous years. In 2008, the total output of canned enterprises with a size of more than 60 million tons reached 58 billion yuan in sales." Liang Zhongkang told the newspaper, at the same time, he also said that behind the prosperity of the Chinese canning industry problems, "the 90's canning industry in the redistribution, transformation is not thorough, leaving a lot of sequelae, the first is the majority of foreign trade canning enterprises, are labeled production, with the family brand, this is. As a result, the independent brand strength of the canning industry is weak, and there is no such situation as instant noodles, leisure food, dairy products and other large brands centralized, and small and medium-sized enterprises follow up. At the same time, due to excessive dependence on the international market, and with the increase of labor costs in China, the profits of enterprises are reduced, and Chinese canning enterprises in the international market. Competitiveness is also weakening; the second is that when most enterprises do foreign trade, some small and medium-sized enterprises take advantage of the weakness and start to do the domestic market, but both products and concepts are moving toward the low end, the proliferation of inferior products, canned prices plummeted.

In fact, as early as before the financial crisis, many experts have been aware of the problems existing in the canning industry, the industry urgently need to upgrade, but the action of enterprises seems to be very small, until the financial crisis, let enterprises really alert, many canning enterprises grieve, aware of the importance of the domestic market.

But when canned businesses look back now, they have already caught up late. With the rapid development of China's market economy, the domestic food industry has also made considerable progress. When most of the canning enterprises in our country are still focusing on exports, and its substitutes for leisure food, convenience food, etc., with the help of the spring breeze of reform, rapid development. Therefore, when canning enterprises return to look at the domestic market at present, leaving little room for the development of the industry.

"There are still a lot of pressures for Chinese canning enterprises to transform, such as the need for the industry to work together to eliminate the misunderstanding of cans, and now the market development costs are too high to enter big stores or ordinary supermarkets need to pay high marketing costs, so enterprises are unable to do domestic sales." Liang Zhongkang analyzed. At present, the competition in the food industry is mainly from the competition of distribution channels and terminals. When canning enterprises turn from export to domestic market, they will find that if the domestic market enters the big market, they will face enormous cost pressure; if they enter the ordinary supermarket, they will face enormous market maintenance pressure.

Industry is in urgent need of strategic innovation.

"China's canned goods are exported to more than 150 countries in Europe and the United States and are favored by foreign countries. This shows that our products are still very good.
