Canada's Ministry of Health says there is no risk of bisphenol A in canned foods. 2018-09-20 09:11:41

Canada's Ministry of Health says there is no risk of bisphenol A in canned foods.

The Canadian Health Canada recently found that the exposure to BPA in canned foods was low and there was no risk to the general population after a study of 78 chemicals in the food.

However, the Department pointed out that the results were only exploratory and could not be used to indicate the distribution of BPA in canned foods. We also emphasize that our overall objective is to understand the migration of BPA in foods through collaboration with the food packaging sector, thereby limiting the maximum exposure to BPA.

In the survey, the Canadian Department of Health also found that bisphenol A was found in almost all of the 78 tested canned foods. The contents of canned tuna products were the highest, with average and maximum values of 137 ng/g and 534 ng/g respectively. Canned soup ranked second, while concentrated soup was slightly higher than instant soup. The average and maximum values of concentrated soup were 52 and 94 ng/g, while instant soup was 15 and 34 ng/g respectively. Compared with 9.3 ng/g and 23 ng/g of pure tomato products, the average and maximum values of BPA in canned tomato paste were 1.1 ng/g and 2.1 ng/g respectively.

The North American Metal Packaging Association (NAMPA) expressed satisfaction with the results and said the study confirmed the insignificance of BPA in food metal packaging.
