Spain strengthens supervision over Fishery Products Labeling

Recently, five major Spanish seafood industry organizations submitted a survey report to the Spanish National Research Council (CSCI), the third largest public research institution in Europe. According to the report, currently only tuna, COD and anchovy in England and Ireland account for 2% and 18% of the total mislabelling rate of canned seafood products in the European Union.

According to the official website of CSIC, the agency is launching a special anti-counterfeiting campaign against canned fish labels in the Galicia Autonomous Region of Spain, which aims to "crack down on commercial fraud of fish products in Spain and strive to find the best way to safeguard the vital interests of consumers and solve key problems". The only national certification authority (ENAC) laboratory is responsible for the identification and certification of aquatic species and types. It was revealed that during the whole process of exploration, promotion and implementation, the above five seafood industry organizations stressed that the principle of "authenticity, technicality and rigorous analysis" must be strictly adhered to, and the relevant Spanish legislation or European legislation should be taken as its legal guarantee to prevent the occurrence and spread of similar cases.

The inspection and quarantine department reminds enterprises to take "unifying and coordinating the traceability of all kinds of seafood products" as the established goal of the industry. Its goal is to enhance the identification of the quality and species of seafood products. All relevant industries and departments of the seafood industry should be supervised by the quality system controlled by official channels, such as ISO9000, BRC, IFS, and global GAP voluntary certification.
