Canned and puree fruit production in South Africa has declined

In the 2015/16 sales year, canned fruit and puree production in South Africa are expected to decline by 7.3% and 14% respectively from the previous year. According to the data presented by the General Manager of the South African Canned Vegetable and Fruit Association at the 13th World Fruit Processing Conference, canned fruit products in South Africa, except canned apricots, are expected to produce less than the previous year. In the sales year of 2015/16, the output of 24xA2500g canned peaches is expected to decrease by 8.3% to 2.76 million boxes compared with the previous year; the output of pear cans is expected to be equal to the previous year, totaling 1.2 million boxes; and the canned fruit of Shijin will drop by 26% to 1 million boxes. On the contrary, canned apricot production is expected to increase by 14% over the previous year. Interestingly, the evaluation data presented by the CEO of the South African Canned Fruit Producers Association show that in the 2015/16 sales year, canned Bulida apricots are expected to fall 14.3% to 17 287 tons from the previous year, and total production of processed apricots is expected to decline by 3.7%. Similarly, with the exception of apricots, all fruit puree yields (28-32 Brix) in South Africa have declined. In the sales year of 2015/2016, peach mud production in South Africa is estimated to be 20.2 million tons, down 4285 tons (-17%) from the previous year; pear mud production is down 27% to 9,000 tons; apricot mud production is increased by 8591 tons (+19%). In the sales year of 2015/16, the output of processed fruits declined due to the small year of fruit. The output of processed peaches decreased by 9% to 127,700 tons, and the output of processed pears decreased by 11% to 649,000 tons. As a result, South African farm delivery prices for peaches and apricots have risen. Apricots are sold at 3056 rand/kg (16%), peaches at 4183 rand/kg (14%) and pears at 3008 rand/kg (23%). Because of the sharp devaluation of the Rand against the US dollar, the value in US dollars is equal to that of the previous year. South Africa's peach planting area in the 2015/2016 season increased by 2% to 5639 hectares, which was the same as that in the 2012/2013 season, but still far below the 6051 hectares in the 2011/2012 season. South Africa also has 2583 hectares for canned pears. South Africa's fruit exports account for about 9% of global fruit exports. "South Africa's canned vegetable and fruit industry is an export-oriented industry, with 82% of processed fruits sold abroad," she said.
