California Peach Canning Industry Worries about Oversupply

The California Peach Cans Association (CCPA) held a meeting in mid-November. Industry representatives concluded that demand for California peach cans was declining and raw material and production prices were at "unsustainable levels this year".

Hudgins, president of CCPA, suggested that in order to balance the supply and demand of peach cans, it is necessary to reduce peach planting area by 17% in 2017 (3,000 acres). "The existing planting area of our industry has exceeded the sustainable price level that the market can afford." He pointed out.

By 2018, California's peach cans industry will have 17,588 acres of land. Peach production is expected to reach 306,030 tons, an increase of nearly 11,000 tons from 295,100 tons in 2017.

From June to September 2017, California exported 116,178 boxes of canned peaches, down 30% from the same period in 2016. According to the California Peach Canner Association, from June to September 2017, California imported 1.4 million boxes of canned peaches, down 12% from the same period in 2016. China is the largest importer in the world, accounting for 60% of the total cargo.
