The Food Safety Center (FSC) today (May 24) called on the public to stop eating two canned sardines that may contain high levels of histamine to avoid food poisoning. If the industry sells the product, it should also stop selling it.

A spokesman for the centre said: "The centre received a notification from the European Commission's Rapid Early Warning System for Food and Feed that the French authorities had detected high levels of histamine in two canned sardines imported from Morocco, with the highest levels reaching 282 parts per million and 1200 parts per million, respectively. In the middle of last month, the batches supermarket imported imported batches of products to Hongkong. "
The centre has asked the supermarket chain to stop selling the products. The centre was informed that a telephone hotline 2606 8658 had been set up to facilitate consumers'inquiries about the affected products.
The spokesman reminded consumers that they should stop eating if they had purchased the same batch of products. If the industry sells the affected products, it should also stop selling. The centre has not received any discomfort or complaints after eating products.
"Histamine is more common in mackerels, including tuna, sardines and mackerel, and is produced by bacterial spoilage," he said. In general, histamine is more likely to occur if the temperature is not well controlled when the fish are caught. Once histamine is formed in fish, it can not be removed even if it is cooked.
"Eating fish that contains a lot of histamine can lead to food poisoning. Symptoms such as burning mouth, red face, sweating, nausea and headache usually subside within 12 hours. "
The spokesman said the centre was aware of the events in the industry and would continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate follow-up action.
