The frost weather in Spain in mid-February affected the yield of early-maturing peach varieties sold to the fresh food market. The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment of Murcia announced at the end of February that frost had damaged 1,986 hectares of peaches and 1,289 hectares of nectarine crops. But industry insiders in the country say the peaches used for canning are unaffected. It's too early to release peach yield in 2016, because peach trees have to go through Fruit-setting stage. According to Spanish industry sources, peach production is expected to be comparable to last year, and no new orchards are put into production this season. The total output of Spanish peaches in the 2015/16 sales year was 583,367 tons, of which 92,198 tons were used for canned peaches and 105,000 tons for jams, pulps and juices. Spanish cannery produces 3.68 million boxes of peach canned with 24x A2_specifications, of which 20-30% are for export. Spain's 1 kg x 24 full boxes of peach cans open at a factory delivery price of $19-20, the same as last year. Spanish industry insiders said: "The market is very calm. Last year's products were all sold, and there was no stock to sell before the new production season, which began in July-August. Raw material prices range from 330 to 350 euros per ton ($360-382 per ton), which is comparable to those in 2013, but 28% higher than last year. Last year, the price of raw materials plunged as Russia banned imports of fresh agricultural products from the European Union, hampering fruit exports.
